Legacy of the Carlisle Indian School
During its 39 years of operation, the Carlisle Indian School was consistently portrayed by Richard Henry Pratt and others as a success story. The school band, the football team, and individuals like Jim Thorpe earned the school international acclaim.
Those few highlights continued to dominate the historical narrative of Carlisle and the broader Indian Boarding School movement until the late 20
th
century, when a new generation of scholars – many of them Native American – began to reflect more critically on this shared history.
